The students were making and selling pins for 50 cents each. Over the course of the three week unit on Africa, $150 was raised. The students then went to the Internet to find their beneficiary. They read about women who wanted to start businesses, finding out about each one and her goal. As each class voted, it became clear that more than one woman needed to be helped. Finally, five women, representing Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Togo were chosen.
