Up against the wall Shashank Rathore clung to a sheer face of rock at the Quincy quarries, one toe planted on a tiny half-inch ledge, the other one groping fruitlessly for a foothold. He swung his leg side to side, brushing his toes in vain against the rock. Fellow climbers called out suggestions from the ground below. One thing seemed to be on everyone’s mind: Would this novice’s grip give out before he found a spot, sending him plummeting to the ground?
